youngster guide to classical music #2

Probably if you do not live in Mexico you're more informed about the events caused by the last week elections than most mexicans here, all this have created a mood of fight and dissatisfaction in everyone, specially in youngsters. That's why this is especially made for the them. Let's start:
Do you remember, remember the 5th of November and this scene?

This are the last minutes from the 2005 film V for Vendetta directed by James McTeigue. Isn't the music inspiring? I feel like it makes me wanna fight, shoot some cannons and shake my fist vigorously. But what are we listening to? Well, it's the 1812 Overture finale by Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky.
Let's go on by parts:

1. V for Vedetta.

This movie is based in the graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, first published in 1988. The story is all about the anonymous hero called simply "V" who becomes a symbol for the repressed people in the futuristic Great Britain and call them to a revolution destroying the symbols that keep them tied. All this is well put by the Evey Hammond character when she says "he's my father, my mother, my brother, my friend, it's you and it's me".

2. The Overture.

An Overture is an instrumental musical form, played as an entrance to an opera, oratory or ballet. Something like an intro in an album. At some point in the 19th century it became and independent instrumental work with no link to a bigger work, and was usually played at the beginning of a program and based in a literary work.

3. The 1812 Overture.

The Year 1812, Festivale Overture in E flat major, Op. 49 was written by Tchaikovsky in 1880 to commemorate Russia's defence of their country against the undefeated Napoleon army in the Battle of Borodino  in 1812 and performed in 1882 at the Cathedral of Christ our Saviour.
In this music you can hear the victory of the Russian army by the cannon shots and the glorious bells. Tchaikovsky uses many melodies in this work: it begins with a religious one from the  Orthodox Russian Church (Troparion of the Holy Cross), then we can hear a fragment of The Marseillaise representing the french army, then cannions of battle and the repetitive melody of "God Preserve Thy People" and finally the triumphant russian anthem (back in Tchaikovsky times) "God Save the Tsar!".

4. The Full Version

If you have some 20 minutes extra you can listen to the full overture performed by the Leningrad Philharmonic during the celebration of Tchaikovsky's 150th birthday.

This music is about the Motherland calling their people to stay together, to forget their diferences and become a nation, and as a nation fight agains an invasor or anything else that oppresses them. Anything from Napoleon to their own government. That's why it's the perfect soundtrack for V for Vendetta and for the mexican people in this hard times.

    Saludos!!
